US, allies push IAEA to report Iran to UN Security Council

The United States, Britain, France, and Germany are pushing the U.N. nuclear watchdog's board to report Iran to the U.N. Security Council for the first time in two decades, according to diplomats and a draft text obtained by Reuters. This resolution would follow up on a similar resolution passed last June, which declared Iran in breach of its non-proliferation obligations due to its failure to cooperate fully with an investigation into uranium traces found at undeclared sites.

The conflict began when Israel initiated airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities the following day, quickly followed by the United States. The bombing destroyed or severely damaged Iran's uranium enrichment plants. Iran has refused to allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to return to the bombed sites or verify the remaining stocks of enriched uranium, some of which were enriched to nearly 60 percent purity, just shy of the level required for weapons.

This latest diplomatic escalation marks the final chapter in the ongoing dispute over IAEA access to those sites.
