Two trapped tunnel workers rescued in Nepal

Two hydropower workers were rescued from a tunnel buried by debris in Nepal on September 4, over a week after severe flooding hit the area, according to Home Minister Sudan Gurung. The rescued men were identified as Sanjay Shah, a 30-year-old mechanical foreman, and Kabir Maharjan, a 45-year-old mechanical supervisor. Rescue teams cheered as they were pulled from their muddy entrapment, with one man being carried away on an orange stretcher.

Shah's brother, Amir Maharjan, expressed relief, stating he was 'so happy' and that his heart felt 'lighter.' Earlier, Australian rescue expert Arnold Dix had reported that rescuers had heard a faint response from the tunnel and believed it to be from the trapped workers. The government had initially estimated that more than 100 workers could be alive, with over 5,000 still missing following the catastrophic event caused by a rock and ice avalanche. Rescue efforts continue at the Trishuli 3A tunnel and other affected sites.
