Tesla launches self-driving ‘Cybercab’ in Texas

Tesla unveiled its self-driving robotaxi, known as the Cybercab, in Austin, Texas on Thursday. The gold-colored vehicle, which has no pedals or steering wheel, is designed solely for driverless taxi services. CEO Elon Musk shared an image of a Cybercab looming over Austin on social media. The Cybercab, which can accommodate two passengers, was seen in Austin streets prior to the event. It was debuted at an invite-only event, with early attendees being the first to ride in the autonomous vehicle.

The Cybercab was specifically designed to change transportation by shifting it from owning a personal vehicle to utilizing transportation as a service. This innovation is particularly beneficial for disabled and elderly individuals. CEO Elon Musk described the launch as humanity changing. It is anticipated that Cybercabs will soon be available to the general public starting Friday.

Tesla emphasizes the safety and ease of use of the Cybercab, particularly for disabled individuals, stating that it aims to democratize clean transportation. The vehicle's debut follows similar launches of self-driving cars in Austin using Model Y SUVs last year. However, Texas state laws require some vehicles to have a human supervisor or driver ready to take over if needed.

Waymo, Google's self-driving vehicle subsidiary, operates in 11 US cities. Tesla has registered 314 robotaxis in Texas, including 45 Cybercabs, according to data from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Analyst Itay Michaeli from TD Securities expects a slow launch of the Cybercab, similar to the Robotaxi, as feedback from early users will be considered before expanding the service.
