Stock up on food to prepare for extreme weather, minister warns

The government has advised citizens to stockpile food in anticipation of extreme weather conditions brought on by the strongest El Niño event in a generation developing over the Pacific Ocean. Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle highlighted that this powerful natural climate phenomenon is expected to result in more extreme storms in the UK, including drier summers and wetter winters.

The National Audit Office (NAO) has also cautioned that Britain's food supply chain is at risk due to the growing threat of cyber-attacks and the climate crisis. The NAO pointed out that the government's reliance on the private sector to handle food supply disruptions is insufficient. Dame Angela emphasized the importance of being prepared, stating that having a store of food to sustain oneself for a while before emergency services arrive can significantly improve one's resilience during emergencies.

The NAO further warned that cyber-attacks, plant or human disease outbreaks, and extreme weather pose long-term risks to the UK's food supply. The disruptions could lead to price increases and make it difficult for vulnerable individuals to afford food. The government is expected to unveil a strategy for preparing for national emergencies later this year. Dame Angela urged the public to take necessary steps to prepare for supply chain disruptions and learn from other countries' approaches.
