GJA Demands Probe Into Military Assault On Journalist

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called for a probe into an alleged assault and harassment of a journalist by military personnel during the New Patriotic Party’s constituency elections in Nkwanta South, Oti Region. According to GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, Adom TV/FM journalist Benjamin Kwame Owusu was accosted, physically assaulted, and prevented from performing his duties by military personnel on July 11, 2026, after curfew hours had begun.

The incident transpired as election delegates, journalists, and civilians were attempting to leave the venue. Owusu was accused of photographing and filming the election process, leading to his confrontation with the military personnel, who reportedly forced him to the ground and damaged his work shirt. Owusu sustained injuries and was treated at St Joseph Hospital.

Dwumfour expressed concern over similar harassment and assault incidents involving other delegates and civilians during the election. He condemned the excessive force used by security personnel against journalists and civilians, insisting that journalists must be able to carry out their work without interference. Dwumfour urged the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly the Chief of the Defence Staff, and the Ghana Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible, and take appropriate disciplinary action.

He emphasized that security personnel should exercise their duties professionally and respectfully while adhering to fundamental human rights. The GJA has also opened submissions for the 30th GJA Media Awards, adding new categories for Bank of Ghana Governance, Economic and Financial Story of the Year, Best Digital and New Media Platform of the Year, and removed the Female Journalist of the Year Award.
