SpaceXAI offers 50% Starlink discount to placate data center neighbors; 2,000 have signed up — goodwill gesture comes amid vociferous community backlash

SpaceXAI has introduced a 50% discount on Starlink service for residents living near its data centers in Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi, in response to community backlash. This goodwill gesture has garnered attention as thousands of residents have already signed up for the discounted service. The promotion includes waiving the upfront hardware cost for the Starlink V5 rental kit, saving users up to $349 in one-time expenses.

However, critics argue that Elon Musk's move is an attempt to buy goodwill as his data centers face criticism for unpermitted turbines that emit harmful pollution. Despite promising to remove the unpermitted generators over the next year, SpaceXAI claims that ~2,000 residents have already taken advantage of the discounted Starlink Residential service, which ranges from $27.50 to $65 per month for 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, and Max plans, respectively.

While this may seem like a significant discount, it still falls short of the lower rates offered by competitors like AT&T and Xfinity, who provide fiber-based connections with speeds up to 300 Mbps. Nonetheless, the offer may be beneficial for areas lacking fiber access and serve as a reliable backup for those needing consistent internet service.

Though this represents less than 1% of Memphis's population, the 2,000 new subscribers are still a small portion of SpaceXAI's overall 12 million Starlink subscribers.
