South Africa recovers R8.3bn in corruption proceeds — but accountability remains elusive

On September 2, 2026, the Government of Ghana successfully evacuated an additional 41 Ghanaians who had fallen victim to xenophobic attacks in South Africa. These individuals were among the latest to return to their homeland, arriving at Accra International Airport on that day. The welcoming committee included Ambassador Alexander Grant Ntrakwa, Head of the Delivery Unit, along with high-ranking officials from various Ghanaian government agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Disaster Management Organisation, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Health Service, Port Health Authority, Ghana Red Cross Society, and the Ghana Armed Forces.

Upon arrival, Ambassador Ntrakwa expressed his gratitude towards the government for prioritizing the safety and welfare of affected Ghanaians. He assured the returnees that the government would continue to support their reintegration into their communities. Ntrakwa encouraged the evacuees to remain hopeful as they embarked on a new chapter in their lives, urging them to utilize their skills, experiences, and knowledge productively to contribute to national development.

The returnees gratefully acknowledged the government's efforts in ensuring their safety and facilitating their return to Ghana. They also expressed their appreciation to the government for the comprehensive support provided throughout the evacuation process.
