Slovenian rookie Omrzel triumphs as Mas extends Vuelta lead

CALAR ALTO, Spain: Slovenian cycling sensation Jakob Omrzel, just 20 years old, claimed victory on stage 12 of the grueling Vuelta a Espana on Thursday. The Bahrain Victorious rider also made an impressive leap up the overall standings, much like his countryman Tadej Pogacar who achieved a similar feat when he was just starting his Grand Tour career in 2019.

Omrzel finished the stage in 30 seconds behind British rider Oscar Onley, who secured the best young rider white jersey. Omrzel expressed his delight, saying, "I can't believe what I did, but I felt super good. I'm still feeling okay. I'm not tired. So I'm just enjoying it at the moment."

With three crucial mountain stages left in the 21-day race, the competition remains fierce. Enric Mas, representing the Movistar team, extended his lead over Primoz Roglic by 27 seconds to a comfortable 1 minute and 45 seconds. Pogacar, six months older than Omrzel when he secured third place in 2019 and won three stages, currently holds third overall alongside fellow Slovenian Felix Gall.

Mas, who has won the Vuelta's white jersey twice, expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance over the early climbs, stating that the 27-second advantage could prove significant in the final week of the race. The Vuelta returned to mountain terrain on stage 12, covering a grueling 166km with five ascents leading to Calar Alto.
