Singapore air quality on Sept 5 from high moderate to mid-unhealthy range: NEA

On September 4 evening, the National Environment Agency (NEA) in Singapore forecasted that haze could persist until September 5, with air quality expected to range between the higher end of moderate and the middle of the unhealthy spectrum, according to the agency's first daily haze advisory. Smoke plumes originating from fires in southern and central Sumatra, as well as various areas of Kalimantan, were observed drifting towards Singapore.

The NEA warned that prevailing dry conditions and southern winds could prolong the haze issue if the fires continue.

The agency reported that the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) for Singapore was forecasted to be in the higher end of the moderate to the middle of the unhealthy range. The PSI measures air quality, with levels exceeding 101 classified as "unhealthy," 200 as "very unhealthy," and 300 as "hazardous." On September 4, Singapore's air quality reached unhealthy levels for the first time since October 2023, with the PSI hitting 101 at 7am and rising to 116 by 7pm in the central region. Other areas recorded PSI levels between 83 and 98.

The NEA will release PSI forecasts each evening during haze events to assist residents in planning activities. During unhealthy air conditions, individuals with chronic lung or heart conditions are advised to avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities. Seniors, pregnant women, and children should minimize such activities. Healthy individuals should reduce long and strenuous outdoor activities when air quality is unhealthy.
