Sifuna Hits Back at Ruto Over Tata Chemicals Shutdown

Senator Edwin Sifuna has criticized President William Ruto's decision to suspend Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited's mining operations in Kenya, warning it could harm investor confidence. Sifuna argues that the government's approach raises concerns about the security of investments and the rule of law. He asserts that investors consider the dispute resolution framework in a country before deciding where to invest, emphasizing that a dispute resolution regime is crucial when businesses make decisions about their investments.

Sifuna further criticizes the government's "Mambo Matatu, pack and go" approach to dealing with businesses, stating that it is detrimental to investment and job creation. He emphasized that the opposition movement Linda Mwananchi will continue advocating for adherence to the rule of law.

President Ruto defended the government's decision on September 3, 2026, stating that Kenya has not received sufficient economic benefits from Tata Chemicals' long-term exploitation of resources. The President claimed that Tata Chemicals failed to establish significant manufacturing industries in Kajiado County despite operating at Lake Magadi for over 100 years.

He also accused the company of not contributing to the local economy by constructing facilities or employing people in the area, alleging that the company had been exporting resources to India. Ruto announced that the government would invite a new investor to exploit the resources at Lake Magadi, imposing stricter conditions to promote local manufacturing, including the establishment of a glass processing company and another for chemical processing.

The proposed conditions aim to create jobs and generate business opportunities for residents of Kajiado County.
