China arrests 52 Singaporeans over alleged pyramid scheme activities

Singapore's Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sim Ann, announced on Friday that Chinese authorities had detained 52 Singaporeans in Guangxi over alleged pyramid scheme activities. Sim Ann emphasized the importance of caution when evaluating business or investment opportunities, both domestically and abroad, particularly those involving recruitment, upfront payments, or promises of exorbitant returns.

The Singapore government refrains from interfering in the judicial processes of other nations but is extending consular support to the arrested individuals. Singapore's embassy in Beijing and Consulate-General in Guangzhou have visited the detainees three times to ensure their well-being, address their concerns, and facilitate administrative procedures. Sim Ann conveyed detainees' messages and family requests to Chinese authorities.

Sim Ann reiterated the government's cautionary stance, urging Singaporeans to be vigilant when confronted with business or investment schemes. She did not provide additional details regarding the nature of the alleged offenses. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that the Chinese police handle criminal cases involving foreign nationals in China in accordance with the law, while protecting the rights and interests of all parties involved.
