Religious minister calls for review of dramas with ‘sensual scenes’

Malaysian Religious Affairs Minister Zulkifli Hasan has urged a thorough examination of several dramas featuring sensual scenes and manipulative elements, both in the guise of art or social awareness. Zulkifli argued that while the intention may be to depict reality, the educational value could be compromised by provocative marketing tactics. The spread of explicit scene clips on social media could lead to the normalization of harmful behaviors and negatively impact the emotional development and character of young people.

Zulkifli warned the creative industry and media platforms not to prioritize viewership and profits over the values and principles that uphold faith. His remarks came after the government announced it was reviewing the screening of the 12-part drama series "Madu atau Racun" for elements that touch on religious sensitivities and local cultural norms.

Chinese video streaming platform iQIYI has temporarily taken down all six episodes released so far and delayed the screening of the remaining episodes, stating that all 12 episodes will undergo editing and content review before they are reinstated on the platform.

Zulkifli also mentioned that the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will strengthen the guidelines for the screening of Islamic-themed content. According to him, 'Great art is art that touches the soul without crossing the boundaries set by shariah.'
