Voting begins in crucial US midterm elections

Midterm elections in the United States commenced on Friday as North Carolina became the first state to dispatch mail ballots for forthcoming contests. These November 3 polls will determine 435 House seats and a third of Senate positions, shaping President Donald Trump's ability to enact his agenda during the remaining two years of his term.

Democrats are favored to secure control of the House, with a Cornell University forecast predicting an 80% likelihood of victory and a projected 226-209 majority. The Senate is anticipated to be more competitive, with Republicans currently holding a 53-47 advantage, leaving Democrats needing to gain four seats to secure a majority.

Some forecasters suggest a 50-50 Senate outcome, with Republican Vice-President JD Vance potentially casting the tie-breaking vote. While these projections are not definitive, Professor Peter K. Enns of Cornell University notes that if Republicans retain the House, it likely signifies either favorable circumstances or an unprecedented event.

President Trump will not be listed on the ballot, but Republicans are framing the election as a referendum on his presidency and encouraging supporters to vote in support of him in the 2024 election. The party faces typical midterm challenges, including low approval ratings, rising prices, and concerns over the Iran conflict. The voting process has been marred by controversy surrounding mail ballots, with President Trump seeking Supreme Court approval for the Postal Service to enforce new verification procedures that a federal judge has temporarily blocked.

However, North Carolina officials remain confident that mail voting will proceed as scheduled. Other states are gradually distributing absentee ballots throughout September, with all required to deliver ballots to military and overseas voters by the middle of the month.
