Rachel Worsham makes debut as Virginia’s first female varsity head football coach

On Thursday night, Virginia high school football history was created as Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) unveiled its first-ever female head coach of a varsity boys football team. Rachel Worsham made her debut as the head coach, despite TJHSST suffering a 36-0 defeat to Park View. With over a decade of experience as an assistant coach at various institutions, Worsham's promotion marks a significant milestone for the program and serves as an inspiration for aspiring female athletes.

The hiring of Rachel Worsham was revealed at the beginning of February. Prior to her current role, she played in the Women's Football Alliance (WFA), participated in the USA Women's team, and coached the DC Divas. Adding to the significance of her appointment, TJHSST's athletics program also includes Jennifer Hammond, who oversees the baseball team.

Rachel Worsham acknowledged the responsibility that comes with being the first female head coach in Virginia, but emphasized that her primary focus is on performing well and setting a positive example for future generations. She is aware of the scrutiny and pressure that comes with being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, but is determined to rise to the challenge.

TJHSST Principal Michael Mukai expressed his support for the groundbreaking appointment, stating that Worsham's presence brings invaluable connections to the sport and a genuine passion for teaching the game. The revamped coaching staff hopes to rebuild the program and garner increased support from the community.

With the football team returning to action at home next Thursday, September 10th, against Stonewall Jackson, Worsham expressed her excitement about attracting more spectators to the games and encouraging community involvement.
