Pulau Redang coral reef damage under scrutiny, Terengganu to engage stakeholders

The Terengganu government will convene a stakeholder meeting next week to investigate coral reef damage at Pulau Redang, according to State Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman Datuk Razali Idris. The session, set to take place from September 7 to 9, will bring together various parties including the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, tourism operators, and researchers to assess the coral reef condition and determine the most effective strategies to preserve and sustain the marine ecosystem of the island.

Razali stressed that the discussions would cover a range of issues, including boat relocation and operations, and the potential need to limit the number of tourists and diving activities. He emphasized that the government is committed to preserving the island's beauty and underwater attractions, warning that without prompt action, Pulau Redang could become just an island without its key marine attractions within 20 to 25 years.

While preliminary data from the Fisheries Department suggests that the extent of coral reef damage is currently manageable, the state government remains open to introducing new guidelines and control measures if necessary. Razali noted that the damage to coral reefs, including in marine park areas, is primarily attributed to natural factors such as changes in currents, hot weather, and climate change, rather than tourism activities as some have claimed.

He also pointed out that access to certain areas, including marine parks, is restricted to outsiders. The Fisheries Department's assessment indicates that the damage is largely due to environmental factors.
