Political bigwigs in race to inherit Laikipia governor’s seat as Irungu exits

The race to succeed Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu is gaining momentum, with seasoned politicians vying for the county's top seat ahead of the 2027 General Election. Irungu, who returned to office in 2022, cannot stand for re-election due to term limits. This has created a power vacuum that several experienced politicians are eager to fill.

Key contenders include Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, former Governor Ndiritu Muriithi, former Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru, and County Secretary Koinange Wahome. Festus Mwangi Kiunjuri, the Service Party (TSP) leader, is one of the most prominent names in the race, having announced his intention to run for governor instead of defending his parliamentary seat.

Kiunjuri's political career spans over two decades, with stints in the national government and several electoral victories. His experience and established network could be crucial in a contest where other candidates also have significant political bases. Ndiritu Muriithi, Irungu's predecessor, is also seeking a return to the governor's office.

The former governor's comeback could lead to a direct political confrontation with Kiunjuri, given their previous election results. Catherine Waruguru and Koinange Wahome, both running under the Democracy for the Citizens Party ticket, have also entered the fray, bringing a new dimension to the contest. Waruguru's recent concerns about alleged attempts to embarrass her at a political rally highlight the intensity of the competition.

The 2022 election results, with Irungu winning by a substantial margin, suggest that the 2027 contest may be more about constructing broad coalitions than simply replacing the incumbent.
