Husband seeks answers after pregnant wife and unborn baby die in Mae Hong Son

On 4 September 2026, a 28-year-old man, identified as K, requested the Pavena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women to conduct an investigation into the deaths of his wife and unborn child. The incident occurred following a planned transfer from Khun Yuam Hospital.

K contacted the foundation's president, Pavena Hongsakul, via a video call while attending his wife's and child's funeral. According to K, his wife was expected to give birth on 1 September and had been scheduled for labour induction at a local hospital on 31 August. An ultrasound conducted around 16:00 on 31 August revealed the baby to be healthy, weighing more than three kilograms.

However, the labour induction did not progress as the woman's cervix remained closed. She was allowed to return home. At around 01:00 on 1 September, K reported that his wife began experiencing back cramps, abdominal pain, and vomiting. He promptly returned her to the hospital, where medical staff discovered her cervix was dilated by two centimeters and informed him that she required a caesarean section.

Unfortunately, the hospital lacked a surgeon and the necessary equipment, so K arranged for his wife's transfer to a hospital in Mae Hong Son town, approximately two hours away by road.

By 10:00, the transfer vehicle had departed. About 10 minutes into the journey, the woman went into shock and lost consciousness. The vehicle returned to the original hospital, where medical personnel attempted resuscitation. Korn stated that his wife and unborn child were pronounced dead at 11:40. He has filed a police complaint at the Khun Yuam Police Station and has asked the foundation to determine whether the urgent referral process was delayed. K remains uncertain about the cause of their deaths.

Pavena expressed her condolences to the family and revealed that her foundation would collaborate with Mae Hong Son’s provincial public health office to seek an urgent review of the case. She also stated that her foundation would work with local MP Pakorn Chinakham to assist the family and monitor the situation. Khun Yuam Hospital issued a statement on 3 September, expressing condolences and stating that they were reviewing records and information related to the woman’s admission, assessment, treatment, and referral.

They emphasized that the cause of death would be determined through an official post-mortem examination and that further updates would be provided as more information became available.
