Patchbay Band questions recognition of live bands in Ghana’s music industry

Patchbay Band, an esteemed live band in Ghana's music scene, has brought attention to the limited recognition faced by live bands in the country. Despite a presence spanning over 15 years, and collaborations with renowned musicians like Akwaboah Snr, the band's contributions to live music have been overshadowed. Guitarist Dominic Quarchie expressed the band's frustration, stating, "Our brand shouldn’t be chasing for stuff, because we’re currently a long-lasting band."

The band has actively positioned itself within the industry, yet they argue for greater acknowledgment of the significance of established live bands.

In an interview on E vibes aired on Joy Prime, Philip Acquah, the band's manager and leader, questioned the existence of a properly structured music industry in Ghana. He pointed out that the TGMA (Ghana Music and Arts Association) and other organizations are privately owned, which raises questions about the adequate representation of live bands' interests.

Acquah emphasized, "I don’t think we have an industry, TGMA and the others are privately owned organisations, that’s why I asked if we even have an industry." Despite being registered with the Ministry of Tourism and MUSIGA (Musicians Union of Ghana), Patchbay Band believes these institutions do not fully encompass their work.

The band's longevity and experience in the industry should place them among the established names discussed when addressing Ghana's music environment and live performances.
