Pacific summit backs concerns over China’s missile test despite Nauru dissent

Pacific Island leaders gathered at their annual summit expressed worry over China's missile test in the Pacific, though Nauru formally disagreed. Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr highlighted that China's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test in July, its first known launch in the Pacific since September 2024, passed over several island nations without sufficient warning.

Leaders called for transparency and advance notification for any future ICBM tests, referencing international practice requiring at least a 24-hour notice. Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen endorsed the majority view, stating it was reasonable for most Pacific countries to have concerns while acknowledging a few may have differing perspectives.

Palau, one of the few nations with official diplomatic ties to Taiwan, had lobbied for a formal condemnation of the missile test. China responded by accusing Palau of creating a fuss and warning its influence attempts were malicious and would fail. The summit faced additional tension over China's objection to Taiwan's participation, as Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province.

Taiwan's Foreign Minister condemned China's "wolf warrior" diplomacy, citing espionage allegations at the event. The summit also saw the absence of five Pacific leaders, who sent lower-ranking representatives. The upcoming summit is scheduled to be hosted by New Zealand in 2027.
