Pacific summit backs concerns over China’s missile test despite Nauru dissent

Pacific Island leaders voiced apprehension over China's recent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test during their annual summit, despite Nauru's dissenting opinion, according to AFP. Palau's President Surangel Whipps Jr. highlighted that China's first known ICBM launch in the Pacific took place in July, passing over several islands without sufficient warning.

The leaders urged all nations conducting ICBM tests to adhere to transparency and provide at least 24 hours' notice, as per international protocol. Whipps Jr. acknowledged that Nauru, a nation known for shifting diplomatic recognition between Beijing and Taipei, had taken a different stance, re-establishing ties with China in 2024.

Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen, who attended the summit alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, suggested that the majority of Pacific nations' strong views were valid, even if one or two disagreed. He emphasized that unanimity was not required to express strong sentiments on behalf of the vast majority of Pacific island states. China retaliated by accusing Palau of spreading unnecessary alarm and warned that attempts to influence other Pacific nations would be deemed malicious and unsuccessful.

The summit's atmosphere was further tense due to China's objection to Taiwan's participation, as Beijing deemed the island unqualified to attend. Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung criticized China's "wolf warrior" diplomacy and alleged espionage at the event, stating that such tactics undermined Pacific unity. The summit also saw the absence of five Pacific leaders, with their representatives attending instead. The upcoming summit is scheduled to be hosted by New Zealand in 2027.
