Over 300 arrested over extremist recruitment attempts along northern border – Agalga

Ghanaian Majority Leader James Agalga revealed that security forces detained more than 300 individuals between 2023 and 2025 for alleged extremist recruitment activities along the country's northern frontier. The arrests were part of efforts by Ghana's Armed Forces and other agencies to thwart extremist groups attempting to recruit locals in the sub-region.

Additionally, during the same timeframe, authorities recorded 47 cross-border incursions, highlighting the persistent security challenges faced by Ghana's northern border. Agalga cautioned against complacency, citing the country's strategic location near states impacted by violent extremism. He emphasized the need for enhanced border security and improved intelligence-gathering to prevent extremist networks from establishing a presence in Ghana.

Speaking at the 9th REPAM-CDS Security Governance Conference, Agalga, who leads Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee, stressed that while Ghana has remained relatively stable, it is not immune to external threats. He highlighted a 12.3% surge in cybercrime and fraud cases in 2024, underscoring the evolving nature of security threats, including the rise of non-traditional dangers that challenge existing governance structures.
