OPay, a prominent fintech company based in Nigeria, affirmed its ongoing operations and commitment to the Nigerian economy during a live town hall event in Lagos on Wednesday. The gathering aimed to dispel misinformation circulating on social media platforms about the company’s planned shutdown. OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, clarified that the company remains fully operational and denied any intention of ceasing its services in the country.

The misinformation falsely claimed OPay would discontinue operations starting September 1, a claim OPay firmly dismissed as false news. Company representatives emphasized the importance of verifying information through official OPay channels and urged Nigerians to refrain from making financial decisions based on unverified online content.

In response to the false claims, OPay announced legal action against those responsible for spreading the misinformation, stating they would pursue the individuals responsible and ensure accountability under the law. The company also highlighted its ongoing legal investigations, with assistance from the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force, to identify the culprits behind the false information.

OPay’s commitment to financial inclusion through technology was underscored by its recent scholarship initiative, which has provided N1.2bn in support of tertiary education for Nigerian students. The scholarship program, now in its 10th year, pairs financial aid with innovation training and career opportunities, reflecting OPay’s dedication to supporting the educational aspirations of young Nigerians.
