Nigerians die after inhaling toxic fumes during alleged pipeline theft, community group says

At least 37 individuals lost their lives after inhaling toxic fumes during an alleged petrol theft incident in Nigeria's Rivers State, according to an environmental group. Over 100 people descended on Okari Jetty in Okrika at night to collect the refined fuel. The police confirmed an ongoing investigation into the number of affected individuals, with reports suggesting some fell into the Bonny River and others were hospitalized.

Pipeline theft has been a persistent issue in Nigeria's oil hub for decades, with criminal groups siphoning crude oil or other petroleum products into boats and storage tanks for sale on the black market or at illegal refineries. The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC) reported that local residents had died from inhaling "Indorama fuel," a form of refined petrol known as PMS.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) urged the public and media to rely on verified information as they collaborate with other security agencies to investigate the incident. The group condemned illegal tapping and siphoning, warning that such activities endanger lives, the environment, and the economy. The government has intensified efforts to combat oil theft in recent years, with naval information director Capt Abiodun Folorunsho warning thieves there would be no hiding place from the navy, which patrols waterways and coastal areas.

Nigeria aims to increase oil production to about three million barrels per day by 2030, relying on improved security and reforms to attract new investment.
