NEA to provide daily haze advisories from Sep. 4, after 24-hour PSI crossed 100 in Central S'pore

From September 4, Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) will start providing daily haze advisories as the country's 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) entered the Unhealthy range due to hazy conditions. The PSI crossed 100 for the first time in the morning, reaching 105 by 10 am. The Meteorological Service Singapore had warned earlier that hazy conditions were expected in the first half of September, attributed to dry weather and increased hotspot activity.

In a joint statement from agencies in the Haze Task Force (HTF), NEA announced it would begin issuing daily haze advisories starting Friday evening. This marks the first time the PSI has reached the Unhealthy level due to haze since October 8, 2023. The daily advisories will include a forecast of the 24-hour PSI, enabling the public to plan their activities accordingly.

NEA emphasized that the health impact of the haze depends on individual health status, PSI level, and the duration and intensity of outdoor activities. They advised reducing outdoor activities and physical exertion to minimize the effects of haze exposure, drinking plenty of water, and ensuring medication is readily accessible for those with chronic heart and lung conditions.

The public is advised to check current air quality readings and advisories on the NEA's website (www.haze.gov.sg), the agency's website (www.nea.gov.sg), and the myENV app. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has collaborated with healthcare institutions and long-term care providers to implement haze preparedness measures, such as using air purifiers, fans, and portable air coolers to lower ambient temperatures.

Public healthcare institutions are monitoring patients for potential health effects and providing necessary medical interventions, according to NEA.
