They showed a preference for individuals with higher levels of organic compounds called ketones, particularly mesityl oxide, which has a sweet, honey-like aroma. This species also favored skin microbes, preferring those with more of them.

The third species, Culex quinquefasciatus, also known as the southern house mosquito, primarily fed on birds but also bit humans. Unlike the other two species, this one did not show a clear preference based on sex. This mosquito species had its own set of preferences, favoring people with higher levels of certain skin microbes.
