Merdeka Awards for Nicol, Mercy Malaysia and 6 others

The 2026 Merdeka Award recipients were announced, honouring eight individuals for their outstanding contributions to the nation. Nicol David, the former world squash champion, was recognized for her remarkable impact on humanities, arts, and sports. Mercy Malaysia received the award for their exceptional work in education and community service.

Other recipients included linguist Emeritus Prof Asmah Omar, turtle conservationist Prof Chan Eng Heng, Paralympic gold medallist and badminton player Cheah Liek Hou, and two academicians: Emeritus Prof Aini Ideris and Prof Emerita Asma Ismail.

The Merdeka Award, presented by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, is a prestigious recognition of significant achievements in various fields. Nicol David expressed that winning the award was far greater than her sporting career, which included professional titles, World Championships, and numerous sporting accolades. Mercy Malaysia president Ahmad Faizal Perdaus emphasized that the award celebrated not only the organization's achievements over 27 years but also the spirit of service displayed by thousands of Malaysians.

Mercy Malaysia has conducted over 500 humanitarian missions in more than 35 countries since its establishment in 1999, providing emergency medical relief and disaster response.
