Man sentenced for helping escaped prisoner Daniel Khalife

A UK inmate, Adeel Khan, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for helping a former British soldier, Daniel Khalife, evade police after Khalife broke out of Wandsworth Prison on September 6, 2023. Khan, who was previously found guilty of possessing a mobile phone in prison, arranged for Khalife to receive £400 in cash and helped him obtain a mobile phone to stay on the run.

Khan's girlfriend was also involved, providing the bank details for the money to be deposited into Imran Chowdhury's account. Chowdhury, who was tried alongside Khan but acquitted, had given the money to an escaped prisoner without knowing it. The investigation led to a nationwide manhunt, with security services placing all ports and airports on high alert.

Khalife, who was awaiting trial on espionage charges, was captured on September 9 after attempting to flee via a canal towpath. During his trial, Khalife claimed he was providing information to the UK government as a double agent, a claim he made after watching the TV series Homeland.
