Lexar Muse claims world's thinnest portable SSD title at 3.8mm thick — but it swaps USB-C for a bespoke magnetic connector

Lexar has unveiled the Muse SSD, touting it as the world's thinnest portable SSD at just 1mm (0.04 inches) at its thinnest points and 3.8mm (0.15 inches) at its thickest. This ultra-thin design puts the Muse right up there with the compactness of a credit card. The sleek, unibody metal enclosure is crafted from a single piece of metal, minimizing gaps and seams for a seamless look.

The drive's unique connectivity relies on a proprietary magnetic pogo-in connector on the rear, rather than the standard USB-C port. Lexar has included a bespoke cable with the drive and a carrying case, enabling users to attach the SSD to the back of their iPhone for additional storage on the go. While the magnetic connection may not be the most robust, the Muse offers respectable read and write speeds of up to 1,050MB/s and 1,000MB/s respectively. These speeds are more than sufficient for 4K 120fps Pro Res video playback on an iPhone.

The Muse will be available in 512GB and 1TB storage capacities. However, Lexar has not yet disclosed pricing details for the drive. Currently, we await its release before the end of 2026, hoping that thinness and lightness will be the primary focus for potential buyers.
