How two interceptions by a familiar West Ottawa No. 20 led to a big home-opening win

Braden Overbeek, the sophomore free safety for West Ottawa, led his team to a dominating 53-22 victory over Mattawan on September 3. Overbeek's two interceptions, each resulting in touchdowns, were the turning points in the game. The interception that put West Ottawa ahead was his first, and the second was his game-winning play.

Overbeek, a three-sport star like his sister Chelsea, drew inspiration from his father, Dan Overbeek, a former high school football star. West Ottawa coach Pat Collins praised Overbeek's performance, highlighting his speed, athleticism, and raw instincts. With 5 minutes left in the first half, West Ottawa led 14-6, and the offense, particularly the ground game, was exceptional, with Jeremiah Edwards scoring five touchdowns in the first half.

Quarterback Abel Anaya threw for two touchdowns, and Brycen Carraso-Silva added another in the second quarter. The Panthers controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the game, with strong performances from the offensive line, particularly Trevor Luhmann, Owen Zdun, Danny Rodriguez, Jeffrey Elenbaas, and Will Osborn. Defensively, Christian DeWitt, Josh Pearson, Xander Mullins, and Alex Carrier made crucial plays, disrupting Mattawan's offense and contributing to West Ottawa's winning effort.
