HarperCollins India to publish Sonia Gandhi’s memoir after Penguin India deal falls through

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's upcoming memoir, titled "Belonging: A Journey of Love," will be published by HarperCollins on November 10. The book is set to reveal intimate details about her life, including her early years in Italy, her marriage into the Nehru-Gandhi family, and her rise in Indian politics. However, the book's publication has been met with controversy and political tensions.

Initially, HarperCollins decided to publish Gandhi's memoir, but Penguin Random House India subsequently backed out. This decision led to a heated debate, with Congress leaders alleging that the publisher faced pressure to remove content critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and China's expansionist policies during Modi's tenure. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot accused Penguin India of bending to governmental pressure to alter the book's content.

On the other hand, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi challenged these claims, stating that the book's classification as a memoir or fiction would be determined by the author and publisher. The publishers of HarperCollins claimed that they underwent the standard editorial process, with certain points raised and discussed with Gandhi's representatives. They agreed to make changes on some issues while accepting the author's position on others, but ultimately, they reached an impasse.

Furthermore, Gandhi's team informed Penguin India that they did not wish to proceed with the publication. Despite negotiations, the publisher stated that they were bound by an agreement and committed to respecting author confidentiality.
