Gambling ban already Pas policy, no need for manifesto - Sanusi

Kota Baru: Pas does not need to mention its stance against gambling in its election manifesto, as the opposition is already part of the party's Islamic principles, stated Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor. The party's position on this matter is clearly outlined in Clause 5 of the Pas Constitution, which emphasizes the importance of upholding Islamic values and laws in governance, including the prohibition of gambling establishments and the regulation of alcohol sales, according to Sanusi, who also serves as the party's election director.

He advised that individuals should place their trust in prayer and tawakal (trust in God) for success in life, rather than resorting to gambling. Sanusi expressed his hope that the people of the state and society as a whole would refrain from gambling activities and not rely on fate. The Pas position on the prohibition of gambling is clear, rooted in Islamic principles, and independent of whether the issue is included in the election manifesto, he told reporters during the 72nd Pas Muktamar.

Responding to a video from Perlis Mufti Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, who questioned why Pas had not included gambling and alcohol-related issues in its election manifesto, Sanusi argued that the manifesto serves as a campaign offer to voters, not a set of pre-existing policies or constitutional provisions. He emphasized that people should understand that a manifesto is not a holy book and that if they do not support Pas, they will continue to reject it, regardless of the issues included.

Sanusi questioned whether there is a need to mention gambling in the manifesto since Islam already prohibits such activities. He encouraged people to recite the syahadah (declaration of faith) as well. Regarding recent developments concerning gambling establishments in Kedah, Sanusi mentioned that the state government was still awaiting further action, including potential legal proceedings if gambling operators sought compensation in court, and they would be prepared to defend their position if necessary.
