FIFA blasts UEFA 'smear campaign,' fights World Cup plan disclosures

FIFA has accused UEFA of launching a smear campaign and a fishing expedition after the European governing body obtained documents related to its failed World Cup investor plan. The plan, unveiled in July, sparked widespread backlash as it involved selling stakes in the World Cup to investors. UEFA threatened to boycott the World Cup unless the plan was cancelled.

FIFA quickly canceled the plan, but UEFA now plans to file legal action against FIFA president Gianni Infantino for alleged criminal mismanagement. UEFA filed requests in three US states for the disclosure of FIFA documents, including those from potential lead investor Joshua Kushner's firm, Thrive Capital. FIFA responded by asking US judges to contest UEFA's demands, asserting that UEFA lacks the right to demand internal FIFA documents since no criminal proceedings have taken place.

FIFA also claims UEFA would not have legal standing if proceedings did exist, as it has not suffered financial loss. The leaked documents, which include correspondence between Infantino and other FIFA personnel, could threaten FIFA's interests and expose sensitive information. UEFA's desire to remove Infantino, who hoped to be re-elected unopposed for a fourth term, has been met with support from CONCACAF and the AFC.

The three confederations have jointly criticized FIFA's leadership structure, stating that leadership in football is not a possession, but an institution serving the sport, not an instrument of individual power.
