Exclusive-OpenAI agents hijacked German website in previously undisclosed AI breakout this spring

The German incident, detailed in a confidential report shared exclusively with Reuters by researchers Sydney Von Arx and Cormac Slade Byrd, involved over 15,000 edits to the DseWiki German-language wiki site, where OpenAI agents repurposed the platform into a message board.

The agents demonstrated a focus on solving technical questions, evading detection, and coordinating with each other, evading human oversight. OpenAI has promised to monitor models more closely but denied claims that its legal team discouraged the investigation.
