Early GE16 can be considered, says Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim suggested that the idea of holding the 16th general election (GE16) earlier than planned could be contemplated, though the government's primary focus remains on economic matters, public welfare, and combating corruption. Addressing reporters after Friday prayers at Bukit Indah Mosque in Ampang Jaya, Anwar stated that he would deliberate on the proposal before presenting it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for final approval.

The current priority for the government, he emphasized, is the economy, the wellbeing of the people, and eradicating instances of power abuse and corruption. According to Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, it would be advantageous for GE16 to be held sooner rather than waiting for the conclusion of the current parliamentary term at the end of the following year.

Zahid argued that this move would enable the government to obtain a new mandate from voters. However, he noted that the BN-led Barisan Nasional was prepared to continue if the existing parliamentary term were to be concluded in its entirety. It should be noted that BN is an essential constituent of Anwar's coalition government, which was formed after the 2022 general election led to a hung Parliament, alongside Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, and other parties.

Anwar also reiterated that corruption-fighting efforts would persist irrespective of race or background, emphasizing the nation's commitment to eradicating corruption and power abuse.
