De-Recognised Madrasa Received ₹5 Lakh Govt Grant, Karnataka HC Seeks Recovery Report

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has issued a directive to the State government to submit an action taken report regarding the recovery of ₹ 5 lakh granted to a Madrasa that was later de-recognised by the Education Department. The Division bench of Justice Jayanth Banarjee and Justice T M Nadaf has given the Karnataka Minority Welfare Department until September 24 to provide the report.

This Madrasa, operated by Saamara International Islamic School in Thanisandra, Bengaluru city, was deemed ineligible for government funding after its de-recognisation in September 2025. The decision came after the Madrasa faced scrutiny by the Commissioner of the Department of Education and Literacy, who investigated numerous complaints about illegalities and institutions operating under different names.

Following a thorough enquiry, the School Education and Literacy Commissioner dismissed the appeal. The Madrasa's educational institutions, run under various names, were scrutinized by the Commissioner, who found no merit in the complaints. The Minority Welfare Department, headed by Additional Government Advocate M N Melinamani, had filed an affidavit claiming that the institution's recognition was withdrawn after a comprehensive investigation revealed numerous irregularities.
