Days after Doval-Wang talks in Beijing, Corps Commander set to meet Chinese counterpart in N-E

In the wake of recent high-level discussions between Indian and Chinese officials, the Indian Army's III Corps, also known as the Spear Corps, is set to engage in talks with their Chinese counterparts in the near future. This comes following reports of increasing tension in the Taksing region of Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district.

The III Corps, headquartered in Rangapahar, Nagaland, is tasked with safeguarding operations in Nagaland, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh's eastern and central sectors along the Line of Actual Control.

Multiple rounds of talks between local commanders have been ongoing between the two nations in recent weeks to address concerns. Earlier this month, Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth visited the III Corps to assess the operational readiness of all formations and ongoing border development projects. He was briefed on various aspects of capability enhancement and efforts to bolster combat readiness.

On August 25, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the special representatives for boundary discussions, met in Beijing. Following this meeting, India and China agreed to advance discussions on "an early and substantial harvest" of boundary delimitation and border management. The two nations also signed on to establish two new border military hotlines, one in the eastern sector and the other in the middle sector, as well as two new meeting points for military commander-level discussions and a trans-border river meeting scheduled for September.

The army command headquarters in Lucknow and Kolkata are expected to host the two military hotlines. Additionally, a Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) point will be established in Joshimath, Uttarakhand, for senior commander-level dialogues. Similar meeting points are already in place in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, and Chushul, Ladakh. Chinese President Xi Jinping is anticipated to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13.
