Dr. Clement Abass Apaak, Deputy Minister of Education, praised the University for Development Studies (UDS) for its innovative Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP). He emphasized that this program serves as a crucial model for bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world community development needs. Addressing UDS's investiture of Professor Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu as the sixth Vice-Chancellor, Apaak urged universities to shift their focus beyond traditional methods like classroom teaching, journals, and conferences.

He stressed the importance of research translating into practical solutions that enhance the lives of ordinary people. Apaak highlighted UDS's unique mandate, positioning it to demonstrate how higher education can directly contribute to national and community development. Praising the TTFPP, Apaak argued for its strengthening to ensure graduates possess not only academic knowledge but also a deep understanding of the communities they serve.

He challenged universities to ensure research findings influence public policy and address challenges in various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, and education. Furthermore, Apaak advocated for research to extend beyond journals and conferences to impact areas such as cabinet memoranda, district development plans, farms, clinics, classrooms, businesses, and community meetings.

He urged UDS to measure its success through its tangible impact on society rather than solely by academic publications or infrastructure. Apaak also called on the new Vice-Chancellor to foster unity and fairness within the University community, urging all stakeholders to prioritize the University's interests above personal, ethnic, or sectional considerations.

He encouraged Professor Iddrisu to lead with a united approach, ensuring that every community member feels valued and treated fairly. Apaak emphasized that UDS's full potential can only be realized when its leadership, staff, students, alumni, and other stakeholders collaborate towards a common goal. He appealed for support while urging accountability from the new administration, clarifying that support does not equate to a lack of accountability, and accountability should not foster hostility.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Iddrisu pledged to enhance academic excellence, strengthen global partnerships, and deepen UDS's engagement with various stakeholders. He affirmed his commitment to good governance, accountability, and ethical leadership, promising a routine approach to transparency. He vowed to broaden the University's financial resources while maintaining professional management aligned with UDS's academic mission.

Iddrisu promised to mobilize support from alumni, philanthropic organizations, and pursue strategic ventures to sustain the University's growth and development. He expressed gratitude to the Governing Council for the confidence placed in him, viewing his appointment as a call to serve the University and contribute to northern Ghana and the nation's overall development.
