Cardiff hopeful of Faletau return for start of URC

Cardiff are optimistic that Wales number eight Taulupe Faletau will be fit for the opening match of the 2026-27 United Rugby Championship (URC). The 35-year-old sustained a shoulder injury in March, limiting him to just seven games last season despite earlier setbacks from knee and calf issues. Faletau has been participating in pre-season training and is set to intensify his comeback ahead of the URC opener against Scarlets on Saturday, 26 September (19:45 BST).

Head coach Corniel van Zyl revealed that while Faletau cannot perform contact, his fitness is in a strong position. He will gradually be integrated into more contact scenarios before determining when he is ready for full matches. Faletau, who has only played 30 matches for Cardiff since joining in 2022, signed a one-year contract extension earlier this month.

Van Zyl acknowledged Faletau's significant impact on the team, praising his world-class athleticism and the confidence he instills in others. Despite Faletau's extensive playing experience with club and country, his recent injuries have hindered his consistency. The coach expressed confidence in Faletau's readiness to excel at Cardiff, noting that his fitness levels are up to par, with the main focus now on building his contact conditioning. This potential return would bolster Wales' squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup in Australia.
