Bundesliga brings the band back together in Premier League's shadow

As the financially superior Premier League splashed out billions during another record-breaking transfer window, many Bundesliga clubs turned to more frugal measures by re-signing former players on reduced terms. RB Leipzig brought back Christopher Nkunku and Orjan Nyland, while Bayer Leverkusen re-signed Moussa Diaby. Werder Bremen welcomed back Niclas Fuellkrug.

Borussia Dortmund were reportedly considering reuniting with Jadon Sancho, but opted instead for Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri on loan. These moves, many of which are loans, reflect the need for German clubs to be creative in staying competitive against the Premier League's growing financial clout.

Nkunku, Diaby and Fuellkrug all struggled in England after leaving Germany on hefty transfer fees. However, they are hoping their return to the Bundesliga will allow them to pick up where they left off. Nkunku, who won Germany's footballer of the year in 2022, has returned to the Red Bull Arena on a season-long loan from Leipzig. He was named Germany's footballer of the year in 2022 and helped Leipzig win back-to-back German Cup titles in 2022 and 2023.

Diaby, who left Leverkusen for Aston Villa in 2023 for 55 million euros, expressed his excitement about returning home to Leverkusen. Leverkusen hopes Diaby can replicate his goal-scoring form from his previous stint at the club. Fuellkrug, who scored in his first game back at Bremen, aims to push himself back into the top tier of German football.
