Azalina calls for red flags at Desaru beaches after three teens drown

Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has urged the installation of red flags and warning signs along Desaru's coastal areas, including Pantai Tanjung Lompat, to prevent swimmers from entering hazardous zones. She proposed this idea to local authorities, specifically for beaches with powerful currents unsuitable for swimming, particularly during the school holidays when more visitors are expected.

Azalina, who is also a minister at the Prime Minister's Department, suggested that families should refrain from engaging in sea activities from September to December due to strong winds. She noted that some visitors might be unaware of the risks, especially at campsites lacking clear signs prohibiting swimming. As for beach patrols or lifeguards, Azalina emphasized that the extensive coastline in Pengerang would incur extra costs, unlike resorts where lifeguards are part of their management.

She pointed out that sea conditions in Pengerang differ from other coastal areas like Terengganu, Mersing, and Tioman due to the presence of strong currents and the fact that it's a trade route. Strong winds can make the sea appear calm on the surface, even if there are dangerous currents beneath, posing a serious threat. Three of the four victims in a recent incident have been confirmed drowned, while the fourth victim, Mohamad Haiman Fitri Supian, remains missing, prompting an ongoing search.
