Azalina calls for red flags at Desaru beaches after three teens drown

Kota Tinggi, September 4 — Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has urged coastal regions in Desaru, including Pantai Tanjung Lompat, to install red flags and warning signs to warn swimmers about high-risk zones. She proposed the idea to local authorities, especially for beaches with powerful currents that are unsafe for swimming.

"This is crucial, especially during school holidays when more tourists are expected to visit the beaches," she stated at a press conference following a visit to the family of a drowning victim at Pantai Tanjung Lompat. Azalina, also serving as the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), suggested families refrain from beach activities from September to December due to strong winds.

She noted that visitors may not be aware of the dangers, particularly at campsites without clear signs prohibiting swimming. Regarding the necessity of beach patrols or lifeguards, Azalina suggested that the extensive coastline in Pengerang would incur extra expenses, unlike resorts where lifeguards are part of their operations.

She further explained that the sea conditions in Pengerang are distinct from those in other coastal areas like Terengganu, Mersing, and Tioman, as it serves as a trade route with strong currents. Additionally, strong winds can create the illusion of calm waters on the surface, even when there are dangerous currents beneath. Of the four victims in the tragic incident on Wednesday morning, three, namely Muhammad Adib Hafiy Kamal, Muhammad Thaqif Rayyan Rumainoor, and Alif Taqiuddin Kamal Hasrul, were found dead. The search for the missing fourth victim, Mohamad Haiman Fitri Supian, continues.
