Argentina’s Milei threatens sanctions on Falklands oil developers while citing Trumps openness to rethink the U.S.’ stance

Argentine President Javier Milei announced on Thursday a series of measures to halt oil development near the Falkland Islands and praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for suggesting the U.S. might reconsider its neutral stance on the islands' sovereignty. Milei attributed Trump's remarks to the strengthening of their relationship, which he claims is advantageous for Argentina.

In a televised address, Milei emphasized that Argentina considers the Sea Lion project to be illegal exploitation of resources in its claimed waters and threatened tougher sanctions on companies involved in the offshore drilling. He also pledged to bolster Argentina's naval presence near the islands. The U.K. Defense Secretary, Wes Streeting, reaffirmed Britain's unwavering commitment to the Falkland Islands, stating that Milei's comments reflect more about Argentina's domestic politics than the actual situation.
