Air India Terminates Pilot Of Phuket-Delhi Flight After Psychoactive Substance Test Returns Positive

Air India has immediately dismissed the captain of its Phuket-Delhi flight after a further test revealed an individual had consumed a psychoactive substance. This disciplinary action was taken in line with the airline's strict "zero-tolerance" stance on safety, fitness and regulatory breaches.

A spokesperson for Air India stated, "The Pilot-in-Command of the Phuket-Delhi flight tested positive for a psychoactive substance." The airline's spokesman added, "In line with Air India's zero-tolerance approach to violation of safety, fitness or regulatory requirements, the pilot's employment has been terminated with immediate effect."

A preliminary report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) into an incident involving the Airbus A320 on August 4 revealed that the aircraft unexpectedly altered altitude by around 300 feet, momentarily losing control for roughly four seconds during the flight. This event caused injuries to 24 passengers and crew members.

The AAIB's report expressed concern over the pilot's positive test result for a psychoactive substance and recommended the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) take immediate action to curb the misuse of such substances. The investigation also examined multiple hydraulic system failures as part of the broader technical inquiry.

In response to the incident, Air India has expanded its pilot testing regime, moving from random checks to mandatory psychoactive substance screening as part of its enhanced safety protocols. The AAIB's investigation into the accident, including technical and other factors, is ongoing, with a final report anticipated upon completion of the probe.
