AI is scanning Abu Dhabi's wastewater for health risks before they surface

Abu Dhabi is employing artificial intelligence to analyze wastewater from 100 testing sites, with the goal of identifying potential public health and environmental issues before they worsen. Known as RASID, this technology integrates wastewater analysis with AI and predictive analytics to provide authorities with insights into community health trends.

The platform, developed by M42 in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC), has been operational since 2022 and has examined over 75,000 wastewater samples from across the UAE, assessing more than 400 chemical and biological indicators. Rather than relying on individual readings, RASID continuously monitors wastewater on a population level.

AI models analyze extensive data sets to generate risk scores for identified threats, and predictive analytics can forecast potential risks and their sources, enabling authorities to strategically allocate resources. Dimitris Moulavasilis, Group Chief Executive Officer of M42, emphasized that environmental data can reveal valuable information about community health.

By interpreting these signals, authorities can make more informed decisions. Abdulla Hassan Al Muaini, Executive Director of the Central Testing Laboratory, highlighted the partnership's integration of environmental monitoring with science and technology, noting that the collaboration is leveraging complementary expertise in these fields.

The wastewater surveillance program has established one of the region's largest datasets of its kind, and M42 is also showcasing its work in genomics, digital health, and clinical care at its debut appearance at the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) 2026, which continues until September 6 at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi.
