A/R: 8 feared dead after illegal mining pit collapses at Domi Keniago [Photos]

At least eight miners have been feared dead after an illegal mining pit collapsed in Domi Keniago, Ashanti Region, on September 3, 2026. The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. at the Amansie South District. Twelve miners were reportedly inside the pit when it collapsed. John Paintsil, a 42-year-old eyewitness and one of the miners, stated that four miners escaped without injuries, while the remaining eight were trapped.

Chinchilla, one of the trapped miners, was recovered dead at around 10:48 p.m. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) received a distress call and dispatched a rescue team to the scene. The trapped miners identified as Kwaku Dada, Akwasi Awudu, Kwaku Badu, Chinchilla, Kwame, Awelo, Kofi Asaa, and Kojo Buabeng, have been confirmed dead. Authorities are now investigating the incident to determine the cause of the deaths.
