A/R: 8 dead as illegal mining pit collapses on miners at Domi Keniago [Photos]

In the Ashanti Region of Ghana, at least eight miners lost their lives when an illegal mining pit collapsed on September 3, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m. in the Amansie South District. According to eyewitness John Paintsil, who managed to escape the collapse, 12 male miners were present in the pit at the time of the tragedy.

Four miners managed to escape unharmed, while eight others were trapped underground. At around 10:48 p.m., rescue personnel recovered the body of one of the trapped miners, who was known by the nickname "Chinchilla". The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) received a distress call reporting the incident and dispatched a team from the Amansie South District NADMO Office to the scene.

The team utilized four excavators to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts. The eight trapped miners have been identified as Kwaku Dada, Akwasi Awudu, Kwaku Badu, Chinchilla, Kwame, Awelo, Kofi Asaa, and Kojo Buabeng. Authorities are currently conducting investigations to determine the circumstances that led to the miners' deaths.
