Why a candidate with aggregate 8 can be placed ahead of one with 6 – CSSPS explains

The Coordinator of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), Sherif Sulemana, explained the ranking and placement process for candidates during an interview on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on September 3. Candidates are initially ranked based on their aggregate scores, ranging from six to 54. The CSSPS then considers candidates' choices for senior high schools, programmes, and residential options.

A candidate may choose a specific school, such as Tamale Senior High School, a programme like General Science, and indicate a preference for boarding. The system then matches candidates' aggregate scores to their preferences, ensuring that available slots are allocated based on their performance. In cases where candidates have the same aggregate score and compete for limited spaces, the raw scores become crucial in determining the final placement.

The aggregate score remains the primary ranking factor, while raw scores are used to break ties. Sulemana also highlighted an interesting aspect of the placement system: a candidate with a higher aggregate score could secure a place ahead of another with a lower aggregate if their raw scores are considered. This occurs when candidates are competing for the same school, programme, and residential option, and their raw scores provide a better reflection of their actual performance.

The explanation underscores the importance of understanding the role of raw scores in the placement process, as it may help candidates and parents better navigate the system. Sulemana acknowledged the need for further education about the placement process and suggested that the CSSPS might review the grading system to address concerns about significant variations in raw scores despite similar or better grades.
