Lagos govt moves to end cycle of dumping, clearing, redumping in Lagos

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has adopted a more comprehensive strategy to combat recurring waste blackspots in the city, shifting away from merely clearing waste backlogs. LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, revealed that the new approach targets the root causes of dumping, preventing cleared locations from becoming waste points again.

Gbadegesin explained that LAWMA is now combining waste clearance with measures to ensure generated waste is properly captured, collected and evacuated. The strategy emphasizes enforcement against illegal dumping and discriminatory practices, alongside improving collection services and preventing redumping. LAWMA is already implementing this approach in areas like Ayobo-Ipaja, Mushin and Odi-Olowo, with plans to extend it further.

Gbadegesin highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration with Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to enhance route management, service delivery, fleet capacity, technology-driven monitoring, and overall sustainability. The ultimate goal is to achieve a circular economy-driven waste management system through initiatives such as transfer loading stations, material recovery facilities, and waste-to-wealth and waste-to-energy projects.

Gbadegesin stressed that this strategy requires the active participation of residents, businesses, markets, PSP operators, and communities to ensure sustainable waste management and a cleaner Lagos.
