Malaysia is set to reveal its medal target for the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 8. Youth and Sports Minister Dr Taufiq Johari revealed the target will be specified by medal type, similar to the approach used in the Commonwealth Games. On September 8, the official medal target will be handed over to the chef de mission and the contingent before the announcement.

This method of medal-target announcement follows the same strategy as the Commonwealth Games. The target will be based on the color of the medals, aiming for the best possible outcome. Taufiq expressed confidence in Malaysian athletes, believing they can outperform their 2022 Hangzhou edition results, despite the latter being delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Malaysia secured six gold, eight silver, and 18 bronze medals across 22 sports at Hangzhou, with squash contributing three gold medals and equestrian, sailing, and karate each earning one gold. Taufiq, along with Chef de Mission Datuk Sumali Reduan, recently met with national sepak takraw and track and field athletes. Both are satisfied with the athletes' preparations, stating they are in good shape and eager for the Asian Games, which will be held from September 19 to October 4.
