US sees India as 'extraordinary' AI partner, says Howard Lutnick

Chapel Hill, North Carolina - Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has described India as an "extraordinary opportunity" for artificial intelligence (AI) collaboration, signaling the United States' strong interest in working with the South Asian nation on AI technology development. Lutnick told reporters at the conclusion of the G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, that the U.S. is actively building an integrated AI technology stack with India to leverage American frontier models and technology companies.

The remarks followed a consensus reached by G20 members on a ministerial statement covering innovation, investment, and economic growth. The U.S. sees AI as a crucial technology influencing scientific research, particularly in chemistry, mathematics, physics, and materials science. Lutnick stated that the U.S. aims to integrate its AI technology with individual countries' systems, enabling the nations to develop national champions in various segments.

The G20 meeting concluded with the agreement on the Carolina principles for emerging technology, which emphasize investing in foundational research, strengthening development and commercialization pathways, encouraging trusted adoption, and applying existing sector-specific rules while reserving new regulations for novel issues.
